Telling one grass from another
A grass weed in a grass crop is the hard case. The weed looks like the crop, and this is where most detection systems fall over. Adrians asked us that exact question, then trained the CultiWise model himself, on that one grass weed and nothing else. Mapping his barley took 9 minutes and 12 seconds of flying and 305 photos, sharp enough to pick out single clumps from 27 meters up.
The chemistry that kills wind grass this late in the season is expensive. A blanket pass across the barley would have cost €49 per hectare, €526 for the whole job. The maps sent the sprayer to the weed patches only, and the same job came to €17 per hectare, €181 in total. The difference, €345, stayed on the farm from one herbicide pass.
